Examination fees once paid cannot be refunded.

Important Instructions


The candidates who clered the paper-I in Feb 2010 exam they are exempted from paper I only. (The candidates have to appear for paper II at this time)

1. The Application Form will be available online only, on the University of Pune website at
2. The Application Form can be filled online FROM 11th November, 2011 4.00 P.M. To 27th November, 2011 till 6.00 p.m.
3. Candidate should enclose following documents along with the hard copy of application form:
a. Copy of Online generated Cash Challan Stamped by Bank or Demand Draft on any Nationalized Bank to be drawn in favour of the “Registrar, University of Pune” payable at Pune.
(if payment method is DD then write your Full name and Application No behind your Demand Draft)
b. Attested Xerox copy of the Caste Certificate in case of reserved categories
c. Attested Xerox copy of the Medical Certificate issued by Civil Surgeon in case of Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates
d. Attested Xerox copy of Mark list of Master’s Degree

4. Candidate must send above documents in an envelope of size 36 cm x 25 cm to the following address either by Post of by personally (by hand):

5. Last date for receipt of hard copy of the on-line filled application form along with Cash Challan stamped by Bank / Demand Draft and other necessary documents is 2nd December, 2011 till 5.30 p.m.
6. No request for changes in the information provided in the on line form will be entertained.
7. The candidate is solely responsible for his eligibility and the information, which he/she has furnished in the application form
8. Incomplete applications will be rejected without assigning any reason and no correspondence will be entertained
9. Only filling and submission of online application is not sufficient for registration as a candidate for Ph.D. If hard copy along with necessary documents is not received before 2nd December, 2011, the registration of the candidate will not be valid.

Eligibility Criteria & Other Details
(For only those registered on or after 11th July 2009. All cases registered before the date will be governed by earlier rules. It is further clarified that any candidate, whose application has been accepted by the concerned Research and Recognition Committee provisionally admitted before 11th July 2009 will be covered under the old rules.)
The University of Pune offers research programmes in different subjects listed in Statute No. 160 and in inter-disciplinary areas leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A candidate shall ordinarily work in a recognized place of research including the University Departments, Research Institutes and Affiliated Colleges recognized by the University. The rules regarding eligibility, entrance examination, interview, registration, supervision, submission and evaluation of thesis, viva-voce, defence of thesis etc. shall be as follows :

For admission to the Ph.D. programme in a related subject in the faculty, applicants fulfilling the following criteria shall be treated as eligible:
a. Persons having passed Post Graduate Degree (Masters Degree) Examination with at least 50% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).

Persons having passed Post-Graduate Degree (Masters Degree) Examination Law Faculty with at least 55%.

5% relaxation for reserve category students of Maharashtra State only.

b. Persons working in National Laboratories- Institutes/Government/ Private Organization nominated/sponsored by the respective employer. These persons should have a Post Graduate Degree(Masters Degree) and holding rank of Assistant Director / or above.

Above-mentioned rules will also be applicable to the foreign candidates who have obtained a Masters Degree from the statutory Indian Universities.
c. Persons with exceptional abilities passed Graduate Degree Examination with 50% of marks and with 15 years experience after graduation in related fields.
d. The fellow members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and / or Institute of Cost and Works Accountants and / or Institute of Chartered Company Secretaries of India shall be held eligible for registration for Ph.D. in the subject in the concerned Board of Studies in the faculty of Commerce provided that they possess a Bachelor's Degree of any statutory University. Such candidate should have at least 5 years professional experience.
e. A Graduate in any faculty who has developed important new techniques (new for the country) or designed and fabricated special instruments or apparatus which are deemed by competent judge, who shall be the fellow member of the relevant National Professional Body, to be a valuable contributions to engineering/Pharmacy may be permitted by the Research and Recognition Committee of concerned faculty on the recommendation of the appropriate Board or Boards of Studies to submit his thesis for the Ph.D. Degree in that faculty. Such a candidates must have at least five years standing as a Bachelor of concerned faculty.
f. Application for research in inter-disciplinary areas and from applicants belonging to a faculty or subject other than the faculty or subject in which the research is proposed to be done and from the international candidates (those who have not obtained the Master’s degree from Indian Universities) shall be considered on the basis of the proven ability and aptitude of the researcher for such kind of research. Such proposal shall be examined by the Guide and the Head, Place of research before giving provisional admission. The admission will be confirmed after the Research and Recognition Committee/s concerned, approves the topic. Detailed procedure for admission should be evolved by the concerned faculty. 5 years work experience in related field is necessary for such candidates (except Commerce and Management Faculties in their related interdisciplinary admissions).
g. Admission criteria for foreign candidates (those who have not obtained Master’s degree from Indian Universities) will be 50% marks or equivalent GPA.
2a. Exemption for Entrance Examination
The candidates fulfilling one of the following conditions will be exempted from Entrance Examination.
i. Qualified in GATE(valid score)/GPAT (valid score)/SET/ NET/ JRF/ SRF examination of the apex bodies as CSIR/ UGC/ ICAR/ ICMR/ DBT only.
ii. M. Phil Degree completed from any Statutory Recognized University.

The Registration form should be submitted by the exempted candidates before interview within stipulated time with relevant supporting documents.

Scheme of Examination

The Examination will consist of Paper-I and Paper-II.

Paper-I :- Research Aptitude Test
For Paper-I, examination shall be conducted online at the examination centers at Pune.
Total Marks : 100
Total Questions : 100
Each correct answer carries 1 Mark.

Paper-I consists of 3 Parts.
a. Language competency
b. Numerical ability
c. Logical Reasoning

The hard copy of the application form generated from online system along with a D.D. or Stamped Bank Challan towards examination fee and following necessary documents must reached on above address.

Copies of the following attested documents are to be enclosed with the form:

Acceptance of the form and the fees does not guarantee eligibility for taking the test. Eligibility criteria have to be met by the applicant.

Permission to appear for the Test is provisional till such time the candidate fulfils the eligibility criteria.
